Wood floors are everywhere, so if you're in the cleaning business, chances are you've had to care for one. Properly maintaining wood floors will not only extend the life of the floor, but will improve upon the daily appearance, which will make your customers happy. Following are some of the Do's and Don'ts of caring for wood floors. DO: *Remind your customers to wipe up spills immediately to protect the floor from damage. *Keep floor mats at entryways and either wipe shoes clean or remove before walking on wood floors. *Use a soft-bristled broom to sweep wood floors. *Use a back-pack vacuum to vacuum floors. Be sure to use a brush attachment so you don't scratch the floor. *Use a neutral floor cleaner or cleaner recommended by the manufacturer. *Use very little water or cleaner when cleaning wood floors. *Use microfiber flat mops -- they leave very little water or moisture on the floor. Don't: *Walk on wood floors with hard-soled shoes or high heels. *Have food, drinks, candy, gum, etc. on wood floors. *Flood mop wood floors. *Use harsh chemicals or home-made concoctions on wood floors. *Drag furniture across wood floors, as they will scratch. If you'd like to offer buffing or waxing services for wood floors, take the time to learn how to do it properly by taking a class. The IICRC offers floor care technician certification for all types of floors, including wood floors. Or check the National Wood Flooring Association for additional information and training.
