How to Care for Bamboo Floors

By: Steve Hanson

Bamboo is quickly becoming a popular flooring. It's now being used in many new homes and office buildings. However, many people are under the misconception that bamboo is a tree, meaning it's a "wood" floor. But did you know that bamboo is not wood, it's actually a grass?

The reason it's gaining in popularity is that it's considered environmentally friendly because it grows so quickly. Bamboo can grow over 50 feet tall in as little as 3 to 5 years! Compare that to an oak tree, and you can see why it's becoming so popular. There are many varieties of bamboo, and the harder bamboo types are the ones being used for today's flooring since they are more scratch resistent and last longer.

Caring for bamboo floors is similar to caring for wood floors. Like wood, bamboo is sensitive to moisture so you want to limit the use of excessive water to clean the floor. Also like wood, bamboo can be purchased unfinished or finished with a urethane or acrylic finish. Bamboo can also be disk sanded like a wood floor.

To care for a bamboo floor, use a dry, untreated dust mop or microfiber flat mop daily. Or you can vacuum the floor daily with a brush head attachment. Spot clean bamboo floors with a moist towel, a microfiber cloth or microfiber flat mop. Be sure not to overwet the cloth or mop.

Do not use any wood polish, wax or solvent cleaners or finishes on the floor, as they can damage or dull the surface. Do not wet-strip the floor. To resore the floor, use a screen disk or drum sand, and then use a high solids urethane or acrylic (water-based) finish.
